Understanding your child with High Potential

A child is said to have high potential (HP) when he or she has a higher intellectual development rate than his or her age. We are talking about an overall IQ (Intellectual Quotient) of 130 or more obtained on a scale of intellectual efficiency.

A high-potential child is characterized by his or her way of thinking and emotional functioning. That is why he must be well understood in this dual intellectual and emotional functioning so that his very rich resources can be fully developed.

The child with high potential also presents particularities in his psychological construction.

Revealing your child’s potential

A child with High Potential may experience academic difficulties, despite his or her extraordinary abilities, and may have to cope with learning disabilities. Traditional teaching is not always adapted to his way of thinking. Thus, many children with High Potential are in school failure.

HPI children generally have an intellectual development lead of two years or more compared to other children.

This early onset causes what psychologists call internal dyssynchrony. This dyssynchrony stems from a discrepancy between the child’s emotional development and psychomotor maturation on the one hand, and his or her intellectual development on the other. This is why the verbal performance of HPIs is better than their writing or drawing.

In addition, this internal dyssynchrony is complemented by a so-called social dyssynchronywhen the school and/or family environment of these children logically expects behaviour that corresponds to the norm of their age, which is not obvious for IPT.
