The compulsory school system in the canton of Vaud has undergone major changes since 2013, two years later, the vote of the Waldensians in favour of the reform sought by the Council of State and the Parliament of Vaud is taking place.

On 4 September 2011, the “vaudois” accepted the Compulsory Education Act (LEO) by popular vote. It replaces the School Act of 14 June 1984. The new law came into force on August 1, 2013 and applies to all students at all levels. Compulsory education in the canton of Vaud is gradually facing some organisational and structural changes linked to the HarmoS Intercantonal Agreement and the LEO law.

It consists of two tracks: the Pregymnasial Track (VP) and the General Track (VG). Characterized by a high degree of flexibility according to the student’s abilities, many possibilities for reorientation or connection are possible in the course or at the end of secondary I schooling.

  • Pregymnasial route (VP)
    It prepares students for high school maturity studies. Specific options (OS) available: economics and law, Italian, Latin or mathematics and physics, depending on the conditions of promotion.
    Reorientation: possible towards the AG, in 9th year only, at the end of the semester.
  • General track (VG)
    It prepares students for their entry into initial vocational training (apprenticeship), either in a school of general culture and business in the gymnasiums or in a school of professional maturity in the gymnasiums.
    Two possible options (Business oriented skills options – OCOM)

    • Reinforcement options in French or math
    • Craft, artistic or technological options.
      Under certain conditions, it is possible to make a mixed: replacement of an OCOM by an OS, therefore to follow, for this OS, a VP teaching in this OS.

General Track Levels: two levels for French, Maths and German. The student can thus be in two different levels depending on the subject.
Reorientation: at the end of each 9th grade semester, depending on the results obtained, changes in levels are possible.

Similarly, a reorientation to the Gymnase is possible at these two dates, in 9th grade (9H) only.

The cantonal reference tests:

ECR sessions are held in May for students from 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th Harmos.

  • In 4th grade: French, mathematics. The result is indicative.
  • In 6th grade: French and mathematics. The result counts as significant work.
  • In 8th grade: French, mathematics and German. The results of each of these tests will be taken into account when deciding on the orientation of students. An annual average will be made between the results of the assimilated and significant tests carried out during the school year, which will count for 70%, and the score obtained in the ECR, which will count for 30% of the final annual score.
  • In 10th grade: French, mathematics. The result counts as significant work.

At the end of 8P, the child is referred according to his or her results for the year (70%) and those of the ECRs (30%) (cantonal reference tests).

  • Cycle 3 or orientation (9S to 11S) – secondary level
